Mini AR #1 Results
Press Release / 22.02.2006
Saturday was the first San Diego Mini AR for 2006. The weather cooperated and we had no rain during the event. There were 65 contestants on 33 teams which is a HUGE turnout for a “small†fun training event. We are happy to report nobody got bent out of shape with the rugged course which had about 3400 ft of elevation gain, a big hike-a-bike going to CP1 and some technical rock trails on the bike course. The course was 1K orienteering where racers had to get just 3 CP’s but only two were plotted on the map. At CP1 they were told CP3 was due east of that point and at CP2 they were it was due north. Quick triangulation allowed them to locate CP3. From an organizers viewpoint it was interesting that many went CP1 then CP3 (on blind faith that running due east would find CP3 – and they followed the leader. Wow, do we have a surprise for you in the future).
The bike was 20K for the regular racers and we threw in a couple of technical climbs for more advanced cyclists making the advanced course about 2K longer. From the start contestants had a small hill to “warm-upâ€, then a hike-a-bike along the power lines to CP1. From there most of the course was rideable, if you found the correct gears. The intent was to have racers complete the bike in daylight and except for a couple of teams that worked well.
