Changes at ACE Races

Rob Howard / 05.04.2006
Phil Humphreys has been described as “the rock of British adventure racing”. As he’s grown ACE Races he’s been the foundation of the sport in the U.K. and set the standards for others to follow ... but you don’t expect a rock to move.

So, Phil’s announcement that he is retiring from ACE Races next year could be a something of a seismic shock for racers around the country. I can feel the tremors spreading even now ... but those planning to race the World Championships at the Wilderness ARC next year, or hoping to get over the 10,000 ACE Race career points mark need not worry.

In his considered and meticulous way Phil has planned ahead to ensure ACE Races will continue and prosper under the guidance of Detail Events. There will be a long term hand over period through this year and he will still be directing the Wilderness ARC in May next year. It will be a fitting final race to complete a decade in which he’s taken British adventure racing from a dozen competitors camping on Ludlow race course to staging a World Championships.

He broke the news in the latest ACE Races newsletter today. “As you may know, I have invested a decade of my life into getting Adventure Racing up and running in the UK. I’m proud to have played a part in creating the current flourishing AR scene here now and I see it continuing from strength to strength. However, for many complex personal reasons, I have made the tough decision to retire from ACE Races next year.”
