Sulkava Rogaine Launched For Next July
Press Release / 19.10.2021
The Finnish Rogaining Association has given the Northern Adventure Team, an endurance team from Espoo, the right to organize the Finnish Rogaine Championships for the year 2022.
The race will be organized in Partalansaari, Sulkava (Southern Savo) over the weekend of July 30/31st.
Traditionally, Partalansaari is known in the endurance sports scene as the legendary Sulkavan Suursoudut, where competitors row 60 kilometers in a race around Partalansaari. (An event which attracts over 10,000 participants.)
The 2022 Finnish Rogaining Championships will be held in this area, with the race area being 170 square kilometers long.
The Race Director for the 2022 race will be Harri Hollo, an experienced orienteering and adventure racing enthusiast. The course will be designed by Lauri Hollo and Jerry Aunula, who are multiple Finnish Champions at rogaine orienteering.
“I have spent the last 30 summers in Partalansaari and exercised for thousands of kilometers by orienteering, cycling, and adventure racing. It has been a long-time dream of mine to hold a race in the magnificent trails and scenery of Partalansaari, and soon that dream will become a reality.” Said Harri Hollo, the Race Director.
“We are especially glad to be able to collaborate with the municipality of Sulkava and Sulkavan Urheilijat 41, a local sports club.” He added.
The course setters estimate that the total amount of controls will be about 80, as the winners are estimated to travel over 150 kilometers during the 24 hour race. In addition, the race will host the official Finnish Championships for 8 hours of rogaining for both runners and cyclists.
Furthermore, Sulkava Finnish Rogaining Championships will introduce new categories for the competition: 2- and 4-hour races on foot, and a 4-hour race by bicycle.
“With the great scenery, Partalansaari also poses a challenge for course setting. Especially, the over 80 lakes inside the island make the course planning interesting,” said Lauri Hollo and Jerry Aunula, course setters.
Official information about the race will be available both through the Facebook page https://fb.me/e/4tHbCix13 and the webpage https://www.northernadventure.fi of the race. Initial race information will be published during October and registration for the race will open on the 15th January 2022.
