ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Malta
Can the Champions Win 7 Consecutive Otillo Races?
Press Release / 04.11.2022
ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Malta will be the sixth and last World Series race of the year. The races on November 5th will conclude the 17th year of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun races.
Hugo Tormento (FRA) & Max Andersson (SWE) won the World Championship with a record breaking time on September 5th. They are now ready for their final race of the season and hopefully their 6th World Series win and their 7th consecutive win with the World Championship included.
"Throughout the season we have pushed as hard as we can to manage a clean streak. The World Series race on Malta will be a hard race for us but hopefully we will have enough juice in the legs and arms to finish the year with a final win" - Says Max Andersson, Current Swimrun World Champion.
The 2022 season has been affected by post-covid and geo-political turmoil. This is affecting race entries but ÖTILLÖ Swimrun feels that they must keep showing that endurance sports in beautiful nature is the future to health and well-being.
"Malta is perfectly suited for Swimrun. Our coastal trail runs are technical and spectacular and our sea is beautiful and swimmable all year round. Further to this having an ÖTILLÖ World Series event in Malta is an excellent opportunity to promote our islands with the ever growing Swimrun community worldwide" says Jonathan Shaw, local coordinator for ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Malta.
THE RACES
There will be three race distances in one day at ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Malta. The Experience is close to 8 km, the Sprint is close to 15 km and the World Series is about 40 km. All race distances can be done as a team of two or as a solo racer. All distances are open to anyone.
The start and finish of all races will be on the beach at Golden Bay. The races will celebrate outdoor sports and the beauty of the location.
Throughout history the beautiful island of Malta has set the stage for many cultures. After 2019 it has become a dream location for Swimrunners.
For this last race day of the year we see several of the best teams in the world signed up together with Swimrun enthusiasts from near and far. This is the most prestigious Swimrun race in Malta.
As mentioned before, The current Men's World Champions Hugo & Max will be racing hard in the front. They will be challenged by a few teams to make sure they give it all to the last race of the season. Among others William Even FRA (second at the World Championship) together with Matthieu Poullain FRA will turn up the heat.
In the Women's category we will be honored by the Women's World Champion Ulrika Eriksson SWE racing with her partner Hanna Skårbratt SWE who unfortunately was injured during the World Championship.
In the Mixed category we have some strong teams too with World Champion Desirée Andersson racing with Alexis Charrier this time.
"We are very excited to show all the teams the beauty and the rugged coast of Malta. It will be a high- speed sightseeing trip" - says Race Director Johanna Edin.
For some it is for the adventure, for some it is for the experience, for some it is to race hard and for some it is to qualify to ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship 2023. Nine teams qualify directly to the World Championship and all other pairs finishing the World Series distance collect ranking points.
