Shimano Gravel Muster Stage Race
All New Shimano Gravel Muster Stage Race Arrives in the Red Centre
Press Release / 26.08.2024
Australia’s first gravel stage race, the new Shimano Gravel Muster Stage Race arrives in the Red Centre this week beginning on Thursday 22nd through to Sunday 25th August 2024.
Set against the backdrop of the East MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, competitors will experience 4 stages over 4 days of riding on outback gravel roads.
When word spread of the event it immediately set about revolutionising gravel stage racing, especially with the likes of former professional road racing cyclist Richie Porte who was quick to sign up representing Shimano; along with a host of other top Australia riders such as Ella Bloor, Imogen Smith, Em Viotto, and all-round cycling personality Paul van der Ploeg.
The event is the brain child of organisers Rapid Ascent who have designed the experience to include a blend of "fast-bunch-racing" with timed racing stages and “social riding with friends” during untimed cruising sections in each day’s route.
“The Shimano Gravel Muster is not just a race; it's an experience,” said Race Director Sam Maffett. “The unique mix of racing and riding allows riders to test their mettle whilst also experiencing the sheer beauty of the outback landscapes at a more leisurely pace,”
“I love the idea of the timed and untimed sections,” commented van der Ploeg in a recent live Q&A on the event.
Each stage ranges in distance between a welcoming 47km on Stage 1, to more challenging routes of 90km to 153km for Stages 2, 3 and 4. The courses incorporate the Red Centre’s quality gravel roads that snake through spectacular gorges and vast open plains. Riders can expect endless views of shimmering horizons under a cloudless blue sky and the rolling red earth beneath their tyres.
Evenings will be spent together in outback cattle stations nestled in the heart of the Northern Territory. With a fully-supported event environment including some accommodation, most meals and all logistics covered, the event will see riders relax, share stories around the campfires, and forge lifelong friendships beneath a star-studded sky.
“The event allows gravel riders to experience this magnificent landscape on their bikes and share their stories and camaraderie with others in the most spectacular setting,” said Maffett. “All without the burden of any complex arrangements!”
The event is made possible by the support from the NT Government which has assisted Rapid Ascent to design, develop and deliver this new event at a national level following the success of its’ predecessor, The Redback MTB Stage Race.
“A warm welcome to competitors across the nation who will make their way to Central Australia for four days of racing. We hope that they stay on after this exciting race and enjoy all the Northern Territory has to offer.” said Northern Territory Major Events Company CEO Suzana Bishop.
