Southern Traverse
Rescue Effort Underway
Susan McKenzie / 19.11.2004

The last day of an adventure race is often a laid-back, relaxing affair. The last teams cross the finish line, checkpoint officials are brought back to town and get their first showers of the week, race management gets to sleep and sort through equipment, and then everyone regroups in the evening for the Awards Ceremony and a great party. For Southern Traverse race management, this last day has proven to be less than relaxing. Bad weather (including heavy rain, gale force winds and the resulting poor visibility) forced Team Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park to stop trekking on the Alexander Range and take shelter in its tent. The team is in constant contact with race headquarters, and had plenty of food and the mandatory gas stove. A rescue team has been helicoptered in to rescue the team.
