Patagonia Expedition Race
Patagonia Expedition Race 2004
Jacqueline Windh / 08.02.2005

The year 2004 saw the first edition of Patagonia Expedition Race. This race is the dream of Stjepan Pavicic, a mountaineer and former champion runner who is a native of Punta Arenas. Stjepan is planning a winter edition of the race for this coming June, and hopes to make Patagonia Expedition Race a twice-annual event.Ten teams competed in last year’s race – coming from Denmark, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. Eight finished the 520 km course. An Argentinian team was disqualified early on for not meeting the PC closing times, and a Spanish team withdrew halfway through, disheartened by the immense mental challenge the wilds of Patagonia threw at them.
Last year’s route consisted of:
1.- Mountain biking 84 km
2.- Sea-kayaking 64 km
3.- Mountain biking 71 km
4.- Mountain trekking 23 km
5.- Sea-kayaking 57 km
6.- Mountain trekking 117 km
7.- Sea-kayaking 47 km
8.- Mountain biking 57 km
The winning teams were:
First place: Xinix Water Purification (New Zealand), Captain Robyn Benincasa
Second place: AXN Meridianoraid.com (Spain) Captain Antonio de la Rosa
Third place: Adventour Uruguay (Uruguay) Captain Rubén Mandure
The fight for third place was especially tough, with a separation of less than two minutes between Uruguay and Sweden’s team Reebok Adventure – a very tight finish after more than 108 hours in competition!See All Event Posts
