Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race 2005
Eastern Mountain Sports Smart Move
Tracyn Thayer / 24.05.2005

As Team Simon River Sports nears the mandatory 16 hour call in limit, Team Eastern Mountain Sports\' navigator Vytenis Benetis took advantage of his sharp navigational skills, surpassing Simon River Sports somewhere between CP28 and CP30. Team Eastern Mountain Sports should pass through CP31 around 5:45AM, and then will be arriving at the finish, barring any navigational errors.Back on the lake, the winds have been raging and the safety boat is out on the second of the lakes, Lake Richardson, making sure all teams are accounted for. Team 32 was seen by Team 41 after 32 had capsized, and team Adventure Poconos helped them to shore. Team 41 was the last team to complete the paddling section and make the 5:00 cutoff at TA4.
Other teams that had to be/will be taken off the lake due to high winds and 2-3 foot whitecaps include Team NEMO Equipment, and Team ATP/Odyssey. All team members are fine, and the race organizers are asking teams to clear the lake to prevent any further or dangerous incidents.
Back at the finish line, Alternate course team Cyclefit-Archipela is the first team to cross the finish line (although not the first team in the 4-person, as they skipped the trekking leg). As Race Director Norm Greenberg congratulated them, he asked how conditions were out on the final bike leg. One member of the team stated \"at one point we were walking our bikes on some snowmobile trails, and wondering why the trails weren\'t \'raked\'\"?? Norm chuckled and replied \"SNOWmobile trail implies snow, thus there is no reason for a club to be inclined to rake them.\"
We expect Team EMS any time, and as it gets later in the morning more folks are assembling to welcome them and congratulate them for all of their efforts.See All Event Posts
