Team Eastern Mountain Sports WINS! 7:02 AM, Tuesday, 24 May 2005

At 7:02am,Tuesday, Team Eastern Mountain Sports crossed the finish line as the 2005 Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race Winners. Looking soaked to the bone, a bit chilly, but grinning ear to ear. Team members Jennifer Shultis, Vytenis Benetis, Pete Swenson, and David Lamb congratulated each other with a group hug, as Jennifer could be seen shedding tears of happiness. It didn\'t take long for the team to gather inside and start thinking about their injuries. When asked how the team is doing, Jennifer said \"Pete\'s got some serious foot issues, and besides that and my bad case of monkey butt \"(Tracyn\'s Note: Monkey Butt - that nasty phenomenon common in adventure racing where the continuously moist butt crack cheeks rub together until their raw... you get the image!?)

The final mountain bike leg, which EMS completed in just under 12 hours, took much longer than the expected time of 5-6 hours. Race Director Norm Greenberg accounts this large increase in expected time to darkness, fatigue, rain, and muddy conditions.

What happened to Simon River Sports? Race Staffer, Andy Chakoumakos, on his drive from TA4 to the FINISH, just saw the team eating breakfast at a restaurant in Andover. They haven\'t dropped out, but because they had been out since 9AM on Monday on the final bike leg, they were probably getting a bit hungry! SRS had spent a good portion of last night with team #17 sleeping and looking for CP29.

The final \'missing\' team ZED, #9, was just accounted for on Lake Richardson. They had pulled onto an island and will be taken off this morning via safety boat. All team members are fine.

10 teams are expected to cross the finish line today before the party begins around 3pm.See All Event Posts
