A Monster on the Quantocks

Nicky Thomas - Dynamic Adventure Racing / 27.05.2005See All Event Posts Follow Event
Crowcombe Village Hall, nestling right at the base of the beautiful Quantock Hills in West Somerset was the fantastic setting for the May Dynamic Adventure Racing weekend. As the rain clouds cleared, the first competitors arrived bright and breezy, ready to mark up their check points on this highly coloured map, the main colour being the densely packed orange contour lines!

Local racer Dave Hooper, from Team Sleepmonsters, was as organised as ever, being the competitor with the shortest journey to race base, he still managed to forget his kit bag! Luckily his wife came to the rescue. Along with the experienced racers, there were quite a few newbies who wanted to try out this weekend but were unable to make the Sunday race so plumbed for the baptism of fire on the Saturday…… would they live to regret it?

Monster Bikers

Mark Beaumont, with his detailed knowledge of the area, had set a challenging course including some wicked single track, rapid descents and taking in amazing views across the countryside. The first hurdle though was the climb to the top, up through the Combe. Unlike the New Forest course, this run course was much shorter, or at least it looked that way on the map, but the bike course was a monster!

During the briefing, Mark advised that despite the sunshine, it could still get very cold up on the hills and reminded competitors that we would be rigidly enforcing the “take a waterproof rule. These would later prove to be very wise words!See All Event Posts
