The endurancelife 7x7x7 - Day 3 Rowing Marathon
Barry Matthews / 05.07.2005

The 3rd day of this gruelling challenge was one of the legs that the competitors were dreading most - 42,195 metres of rowing on a Concept 2 Ergo rowing machine. The ergos were lined up in the most spectacular location, under a canopy on the terrace of the Marine Hotel in Salcombe, with amazing views of the yachts bobbing on the waters below and the people sailing them staring back in bewilderment at the line of rowers frantically rowing at 9am on a Tuesday morning !
As the siren announced the start of the event, the rowers followed their own personal styles and strategies to complete the 42km as quickly and painlessly as they could. Iain Lamont soon took an early lead maintaining sub 2min 500m splits for the first hour. Many thought he might not be able to keep up the level of exertion for the entire distance, but they were proved wrong, as Iain powered his way over half way and then completed the marathon distance in an astonishing 2hrs, 50mins and 25 seconds, an even more impressive time, considering Iain was injured in Monday\'s marathon and completed over 35 miles on yesterday\'s bike leg.
Second to finish was Jonas Nilsson in 2:53:00 just beating Peter Welby Everard in 2:53:10, just 10 seconds behind.
The entire field, put in amazing performances, demonstrating their levels of grit, determination and athleticism on this one of the week\'s toughest tests.
Fortunately the Marine Hotel is equipped with some of the regions best leisure facilities and the competitors enjoyed the jacuzzi and pool and relaxed after their exertions and enjoyed the views and some well earned refreshment.
Tomorrow is the road running marathon followed on Thursday what for some will be the ultimate test - the kayaking marathon, which is likely to take some more than 8 hours of non stop paddling to complete.
It\'s now neck and neck at the top with Graham Walton, Neil Thubron, Joe Green and Shaun Callaghan all fighting it out for the top stop, but with 4 days still to go it is still anybodies race !
