The endurancelife 7x7x7 - Day 4 - Road Running Marathon
06.07.2005

A wild and windswept Dartmoor was the location for day 4 of this extreme endurance challenge. The 4th marathon distance event of 7 and the 2nd running marathon in 4 days. The rain held off, but the wind felt unseasonally cold as the athletes started the first lap of the spectacular 3 lap course at 10am this morning.
Tired, aching limbs soon warmed up as the pack soon split into groups. The front runners consisted of Neil Thubron, Graham Walton, Joe Green, Shaun Callaghan and Peter Welby Everard. The group spurred each other on to some excellent split times.
Joe and Graham passed the 15 mile check point in 2.51 with Neil only 1 minute behind. On the final lap, Joe proved the stronger of the 3 and at 24 miles had built up a 5 minute lead on his rivals finishing in an amazing 3 hours, 14 minutes and 14 seconds. By this stage Graham was slowing, but Neil was finishing strongly to claim 2nd place behind Joe in 3.20.20.
As the leaders jostled for position, a fluorescent yellow clad runner, was finishing with a final burst. Shaun Callaghan had saved sufficient energy to run an incredible final 2 miles and in doing so he managed to overtake Graham Walton only metres from the finish line to claim 3rd position in 3.28.23.
In 5th position was Peter Welby Everard who ran a very steady race to finish in 3.32.33 closely followed by Jonas Nilsson, the Swede finishing strongly in 3.47.04.
Iain Lamont claimed an impressive 7th position, overcoming the injury sustained on Sunday\'s run and managing to run home carrying a pint of Guinness ! To rapturous applause...
Dave Thomas finished only his second ever running marathon, his first was Sunday ! And Ruth White put in a very strong performance to finish in 9th position in 4.16.42. Closely followed by her smiling team mate Natasha Ballard in 4.28.00
All in all it has proved another gruelling challenge as this relentless endurance test moves on to the 5th day tomorrow as the competitors take on what for some is likely to be more than 7 hours of non stop paddling in the 26.2 kayaking marathon !
