Things soon become clear when only 5 minutes in to the event teams begin plunging into the water, clothes, shoes and all and start swimming, floating and dog-paddling across the dam. The first 4 teams – Millie Too, La Tronk, Ultimax Stingers, and Millie PowerBar quickly pulled away from the rest of the filed as they ‘coasteered’ along the rocks and through the water along the edge of the dam before heading up on the walking tracks to pick up some checkpoints before returning to the main transition area.

Here it became exciting as the first half of the field jumped on their mountain bikes for a bike/orienteer/bike section and the second half of the field set off in a flotilla of yellow 3-person kayaks. Millie Too, a local Manly Team showing some fine mountain biking skills got a lead going into the paddle leg and managed to hold it to the finish. Showing that the girls don’t slow the pace, the mixed team of La Tronk came in second place only 5 minutes back. Last seasons AROC winners and some of Australia’s best orienteers, the Ultimax Stingers fought hard to come back and came in a close third. The next AROC event is sure to be a challenge between these top teams as they fight it out for supremacy. The all girls team, The Hoot-hers, carried over their winning form from the last season taking out the female category and coming in an amazing 7th overall.
