Dawn Shines on the Beast

Corey Rosen / 24.10.2005See All Event Posts Follow Event
As dawn struck the Beast of the East adventure race course, Team 105 - Simon River Sports, had a slight lead. The teams were in the middle of a fifty-eight mile paddle starting from the beach at Claytor Lake. This first portage didn\'t seem to be much of a problem for the racers who had passed over the night but in the early hours of the morning, the dam let free some water and caused a few problems for teams approaching it.

Team 105 continued to push their lead further into the race. Noticing a road on the map that seperated two sections of the river by about one mile they made an unscheduled portage through a small town in Virginia. This mile long walk bypassed over five miles of river and increased their lead by over an hour. They arrived at CP3 at 11:18am, a full two hours and twenty miuntes ahead of the second place team allowing them to rest up and eat before the next leg of the race, The Ascent.

Team 101 - E-CAPS arrived at CP3 at 1:39pm followed closely by Team 109 - Adidas Canada. From this point in the race, after one team checked into the CP, another team was seen paddling around the bend in the river about 15 minutes behind.

104 - OLN Goals ARA arrived at 2:00pm.
103 - Naked Bean arrived at 2:20pm.
108 - Terranuats arrived at 2:26pm.
100 - Black River Adventure arrived at 2:59pm. 107 - Team Endeavor arrived at 3:17pm followed by 51 - MorFun at 3:21pm.
52 - Limbskins arrived at 3:43pm.
102 - HYPE arrived at 3:53.

Following the arrival of this team there was a long break in the action. At this point, the last place team was more than six hours behind.See All Event Posts
