Hurricane Wilma affects The Beast

As we cross into day three of the Beast of the East, Team Black River Adventure withdrew from the race. With lower than expected temperatures, the racers did not feel their gear would sustain them for the rest of the morning. Also, two team members were not feeling at one-hundred percent. This led to the decision to withdraw at 10:23pm at checkpoint 12.

With some teams getting messages from home about damage done from the Hurricane, we are getting hit here in Virginia by the outer rings of the storm. Although the winds are not blowing at high speeds, the temperature and the precipitation have been causing problems for racers all over the course. Snow is falling in certain areas and the weather report tells us that it is not letting up.

All but three of the remaining teams are still on the 110-mile bike leg. They have all completed the Orienteering section and are spread out over the remaining fifty-two miles of the bike leg. Simon River Sports is in first place leaving Checkpoint 15 at 1:13am this morning. They had such a lead over the rest of the field, they decided to sleep a few hours before moving onto the approximately 35 mile trek.See All Event Posts
