With dark, heavy clouds looming around the start, 87 teams lined up for what would turn out to be a day of unbelievably wet, muddy and testing adventure racing. In a staggered start, the Premier Mixed category got first crack at “Bucket Love, an all out frenzy of flying eggs and sloshing water requiring one ‘lucky’ team member to catch two eggs hurled by their teammates.

For those with deft skills and teamwork, it was straight into another quick obstacle and then onto their bikes for a dash around Belangalo State Forest, whilst those who smashed their eggs were sent through the punishment run- a quagmire of slippery mud, sand and liquid.
Leg one consisted of two mountain bike sections split by an orienteering course on foot. As the teams flooded back into race HQ after leg one, it became evident that the excellent navigational skills of Simon Manson, Christie Sym and Robert Preston of Team Le Tronk had come into play, leading the rest of the field by a solid five minutes at this stage. In hot pursuit were the all-male AROC Mountain Designs team the mixed Mountain Designs team from Queensland.

As these three teams passed through the HQ transition area, into Leg Two and the Three Wise Monkeys obstacle, the already soaking rain intensified once more, bringing a surge of water through the obstacle area and making clear communication extremely difficult. As the bulk of the field returned from leg one, the deluge continued and the area surrounding Race HQ became a spectacularly muddy bog.
