Ready For An Expedition Run

Runners and guests are converging on San Jose, Costa Rica, this week for the second annual edition of The Coastal Challenge, which will take place from January 20-30, 2006, throughout Southwest Costa Rica. More than 75 competitors and registered guests have signed on for an ultra marathon adventure and running experience unlike any other.

Competitors from Canada, Costa Rica, Europe, Hong Kong, Hungary, Latvia, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the UK and the United States will battle for seven days over 250 kilometers of exotic terrain. They will run, walk, hike and possibly crawl over some of the world’s most spectacular beaches and most challenging rain forests for the sport’s largest prize purse of $20,000 USD.

The course will take competitors, guests, and the event’s roving campground and cantina, from Quepos to Carate, and cover approximately 35-percent coastal terrain, 45 percent highlands and cloud forest trail and 20 percent dirt roadways and rain forest trails. While competitors are running registered guests will enjoy many scheduled adventure activities including canopy walks and sight seeing, horse back riding and whitewater rafting, and just laying around on beautiful beaches and camping under starlit skies.

Over the seven days of the race runners embrace the spirit of adventure, discovery and camaraderie within a long distance running competition while navigating beaches, rock outcroppings, wide river crossings, pristine coastal rainforests and highland mountain ranges. It is an expedition run of epic proportions, which will introduce competitors to the hospitality of the local Tica culture and include several evenings of music and fiesta at encampments on or near the beach.
