Canberra Adventure – 21 January 2006

AROC Sport / 23.01.2006See All Event Posts Follow Event
After collecting the maps and instructions at registration and, for those with a little extra time, checking out the latest exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, it was into the busses for the record 85 teams for a 20 minute ride to the start.

The first leg was on foot taking teams through the Majura bush land to the bike drop about 4km away. With an amazing start by AROC and adventure racing new-comers, the David Osmond Fan Club (lets call them the DOFC for short) they were already 4 minutes ahead of the pack at TA1 where they collected the bikes and set off into the Majura Pines and some great single track riding before getting on to fire trails taking them around the back of Mt Ainslie and to Russell Offices.

Here teams left their bikes and employing a bit of strategy collected any 9 of the 10 checkpoints on foot. A tempting bonus checkpoint was placed on the hill – you could get it at any time by foot or bike. If teams went to this it gave them a 15 minute time bonus but it was touch and go whether it was worth it. The DOFC took the punt. It took them an extra 9 minutes to get there so for them it was a bonus. But boy can this team run. Everyone else decided not to bother and they were probably right. www.crankyspinach.com were the only other team to attempt the bonus CP. They did it by bike on the next leg – a great effort.
