The Coastal Challenge
The Competition Heats Up
Van Holmes / 24.01.2006

Day 2 of The Coastal Challenge brought fierce competition at the front with several lead changes ... and everyone suffered on a hot, dry day.Ronald Tores, of Costa Rica, tied for first place and maintained his lead for the second day finishing in a long 7 hours, 14 minutes and 5 seconds. Adam Chase, from the United States, also tied for the day’s top spot holding tight to his second position. Juan Carlos, who struggled yesterday, recharged and pushed the pack the entire stage ending with a third place finish (7:41:10), moving him up significantly in the over-all standings. Claire Johnson, of London, took forth place today (7:43:25), and Mark Matyazic, from California, logged the fifth best time of 8:09:35.
The day’s race started early, at 5:45 a.m., before the sun rose over camp. Runners immediately embarked on an uphill battle climbing rough dirt roads and trails high into the Filacostera Mountain Range, which range from Quepos to Panama. By approximately 7:20 a.m. the morning’s front-runners had reached their highest peak with Chase leading the pack. The rapid elevation gain and technical track slowed their pace significantly and left more than 40 km to finish the day. See All Event Posts
