Canadians to face the Andes

Team Siemens / Raid the North Canada will be the lone Canadian representative at this year’s edition of Desafio de los Volcanes – The Great Patagonia Endurance Race. The 7-day race will follow the “Route of the Conquerors� and the course will cover roughly 600km of unmarked terrain. Scheduled for Jan 29-Feb 4, 2006, this non stop race will start on the west coast of Chile, wind through a course of Pacific coastlines, temperate forests, legendary Patagonian rivers, lakes and the snow capped volcanoes of the Andes. The race finishes in Lanin National Park, Argentina. Known around the world as one of the expedition-length events of the year, the race has attracted over 70 teams from around the globe, including such names as Epinephrine, Cross Sportwear and AXN Mexico. The team consists of some of a bunch of tools coined as some of Canada’s top racers, including Geoff “The Laser Level� Langford, Laura “The Grinder� Rowe, Mike “The Pipewrench� Popik and Jason “The Hammer� Lane. The team will carry the hopes of Canadian adventure racers on their shoulders as they travel to one of the world’s premier race sights, made famous by hosting one of the first Eco-Challenge courses. Mike says he looks forward to the navigational challenges the region is known to present, but states he will rely on his Slovak instincts and iron-laden (and occasionally alcohol-laden) blood to find the right course.
Starting Jan 29th the teams will battle for seven days to earn a piece of the $60,000 US prize money. The team says they’re not thinking about finishing in a certain position, but rather focusing on hammering through and relying on each others strengths - and letting the ranking take care of itself. They hope to see penguins – real or imagined.
