Brad Williams / 29.01.2006

Ronald Tores, from Costa Rica, and Claire Johnson, from London, England, won the over-all men's and women's divisions of the second installment of The Coastal Challenge today finishing the 250-km course on the beach at Carate deep in southern Costa Rica. Tores finished first over-all with a total seven-day time of 28 hours, 56 minutes and 31 seconds, and Johnson, a newcomer to the sport of expedition and ultra running, finished third over-all with her time of 32:21:39.Juan Carlos, also from Costa Rica, finished second over-all and second in the men's division with a total time of 30:15:12, and Mark Matyazic, from Southern California rounded out the men's top three finishing 33:09:13 and forth over-all.
Lagia Madreal, another local Costa Rican, earned second place in the women's division at 36:55:19, while Isabella Delahoussaye, from New Jersey, placed third with a total time of 38:45:51.
Ronald Tores and Juan Carlos, the top two finishers were an inspiration to the entire field and drove the front of the race all week ... usually with a smile. They proved extremely strong through the rugged environment overcoming heat, exhaustion from racing day after day, and the brutal course which included extreme elevations and technical trails, along with soft sand beaches and long dusty roads under the pounding sun.
"It was the toughest thing I've ever done," Lagia Madreal, a regular adventure racer, said. "With adventure races you're with a team, and this is you, alone. Now you have to just fight with yourself to keep going. No one else is there to push you."See All Event Posts
