In the grounds of Eastnor Castle near the English/Welsh border is the Land Rover Experience centre, described as ‘the spiritual home of Land Rover’, and this week the venue for the Land Rover G4 Challenge International Selection.

Candidates have travelled here from 18 countries, each of which held their own national selection weekend to select 3 candidates from thousands of applicants. Those who won through now face a week of exhaustive training, testing and competition, at the end of which only one competitor from each country will go forward to the G4 Challenge itself, starting in Bangkok on April 23rd.

They are all hoping to represent their country in ‘the ultimate global adventure’, which begins with an urban competition in front of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, before crossing Thailand north into the jungles of Laos. With stages 1 & 2 complete G4 moves across the globe to the white sands of the world famous Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro. After an exciting urban start to Stage 3 the ultimate destination is Bolivia, where the remote stage 3 & 4 will take competitors up into the Andes and through the salt plains of the Salar de Uyuni to a climax at an altitude of over 4000m.

At the heart of the competition is 4x4 driving but it includes sports such as mountain biking, kayaking, climbing, orienteering and abseiling, and is as much a test of initiative, strategic thinking and team spirit as it is of physical fitness, sporting skills and driving ability. The G4 Challenge is designed to test every aspect of the competitor’s character, and it is that range of skills and personal qualities that the G4 staff are looking for during this final selection stage.

On Friday February 3 after five days of gruelling activity the winning competitor from each country will be announced. Those chosen to represent their country will be on the start line in Thailand for the 2006 G4 Challenge, ready for the adventure of a lifetimeSee All Event Posts
