Who is Taking Part?

Competitors from 18 countries are taking part in the International Selection and they come from a variety of professional and sporting backgrounds, including many adventure racers.

The Australian trio of John Jacoby, Alina McMaster and Tom Landon-Smith all list their occupations as ‘Event Manager’ and run two of the biggest AR series in the country, as well as competing at the highest level.

Martin Dreyer of South Africa has been a team mate of Jacoby’s on Team Montrail in recent years and lists his occupation as ‘Pro Sportsman’, and Monique Aguilera is one of Spain’s top racers. All 3 of the Irish contestants, Gary Robertson, Vanessa Lawrenson and Paul Mahon are experienced expedition racers, as are several of the South Americans taking part.

The two youngest competitors are both 23 years old and on the Russian team (Evgeniya Runova and Pavel Fedorov), and the oldest competitor is Takashi Sugiyama of Japan who is 50.
