Event six: snow shoe runLocation: Robert Campbell Highway
The UK team was optimistic of moving into the top three overall on day four of the 2006 Fulda Challenge in Canada’s Yukon Territory. The ten teams of athletes headed north-west to Faro along the Robert Campbell Highway in preparation for what they anticipated being the only event of the day, the tyre change.
This route is off the beaten track and offers a more remote alternative to the Alaska Highway. With the wind howling and blizzard conditions, the convoy of Toyota 4x4 vehicles travelled slowly for 240km before the organisers presented the competitors with an unexpected challenge.
The dog sled event had been declared null and void after a protest by some of the teams on Tuesday. The full quota of ten events in the Fulda Challenge was reinstated with an 800m snowshoe race.
The UK’s male representative Martin Yardley powered his way along a remote airstrip at the side of the highway and collected seven points for fourth place. However, Kate was disappointed with the two points she took for finishing in ninth position after making her snowshoe debut. See All Event Posts
