Urban Impulse
Animal droppings, jail cells, and a paddle boat… why not!
The Yeti / 05.02.2006

No, not by some sleek sea kayak or sevylor inflatable, rather a daunting fleet of paddleboats awaiting teams on the Torrens River. As 17 boats headed west in search of CP 1 in a less then graceful fashion, it was clear that this was hardly going to be a sprint event! With rain coming down, some teams chose to stay dry by making use of the colourful parasols with which their paddle boats were equipped, while others dealt with the downpour in hopes of salvaging some speed in their already aerodynamically-challenged watercrafts. The first team out of the boats was the devoted mountain biking team “One More Minute, using their biking legs to propel them through the water in under 30 minutes. With other teams dealing with the gremlins in their various boats, the field had spread out heading into CP 2. A unique aspect to this race was the use of urban Adventure Challenges throughout the course. After a run through the parkland and boutique shops of North Adelaide, teams found themselves at the first Adventure Challenge in the Botanic Gardens where they were sent to find three navigationally demanding checkpoints. The hunt for a an old oak tree and a World War II monument puzzled some teams but the kicker came as teams headed into the rose garden maze in search of an elusive check point that required a quick fix by organisers to get teams on their way.
