Final Showdown in Tombstone

06.02.2006See All Event Posts Follow Event
The sixth and final day of the 2006 Fulda Challenge was held in extremely low temperatures. The weather conditions meant that the hovercraft race on the frozen Yukon River had to be cancelled at the last minute. It was replaced with a 4x4 driving competition to ensure that the Artic decathlon maintained its full quota of events.

Event 9: Mountain Run
Location: Tombstone Mountains

The competitors left Dawson City and travelled along the seemingly endless Dempster Highway – the road to the Arctic Circle – to participate in the mountain run. They faced a race against time at the incredible location of the Tombstone Mountain Range.

There were only a few points separating the top five teams as the athletes started out on the steep 3km course. They had to climb to the top of a mountain in snow shoes, before running across a ridge at the peak and then descending to the finish.

In the men's race, Martin Hollerbach of the German Lowa team took another maximum ten points, closely follwed by Austria’s Daniel Hechenblaikner. The UK’s Martin Yardley finished the race 13 minutes behind the winner in sixth position.

Germany Toyota's Scheich won the women's competition with the UK’s Kate Balchin crossing the finish line ten minutes later in fourth.See All Event Posts
