Wind conditions were favourable during the open water paddle and with the breeze at their backs, the sixteen teams competing in the opening race of the X-Adventure Raid series enjoyed a fast downwind journey.

Realising the strength of Team Spyder, Sport 2000 Lafuma made it their goal to stick with the U.S. / Australian combination during the opening stage and the result turned out too be better than expected.

“We want to go near the Australian team because they are famous in canoe. Sport 2000 Lafuma’s team spokesman told Sleepmonsters.

“With the wind and the sail it is o’k, we want to make a good place because there are many stages.

Team Spyder, powered by Darren Clarke in the canoe leg suffered an early mishap, when their canoe capsized. It cost the highly fancied team several minutes.

“We had a couple of capsizes out there, Spyder’s Narelle Ash said.

“The media boat came up beside us and that put us off a bit and over we went.

“We’ve removed the compression straps for the second paddle so hopefully we’ll have a little bit more stability. That was a bit of a mistake really putting compression straps on and not trialling it.
