X-adventure Raid World Cup 2006
French Maintain Lead - Spyder Bites Back
John Michael Flynn / 17.03.2006

French team Sport 2000 Lafuma still holds the race lead after the second canoe paddle stage of the X-Adventure Raid World Cup season opener in Western Australia. But the French will need to be wary of the U.S. / Australian combination of Team Spyder which appears to have put a shaky opening canoe leg behind it.
The second canoe paddle, a seven kilometre journey between Castle Bay and Bunker Bay on Western Australia’s South-West Coast was once again staged in comfortable conditions, the only challenge being a tricky shore break which saw several crews receive an unceremonious dunking at stage end.
The heat is starting to build, both figuratively in terms of the leaderboard, and physically as the cool early morning conditions give way to what is expected to be a warm to hot Western Australian day.
These are the sort of conditions which several of the European teams contesting the x-Adventure Raid World Cup series opener fear, but time will tell as to what effect it has on competitors.
Two stages of running lie in front of the competitors, with a 14 kilometre effort followed by a marathon 33 kilometre jog through the undulating sandhill country on the exposed western coast.
