Heat Taking Brutal Toll as Racers Reach The Ropes
John Michael Flynn / 18.03.2006

As expected the fourth stage of the X-Adventure Raid World Cup series opener at Margaret River Australia is taking a brutal toll.Nearing the end of the 33 kilometre trek, the two leading teams have reached the ropes section, a spectacular granite cliff set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. The climb, known to locals as the ‘stainless steel wall’ is one of Western Australia’s most popular rock climbing destinations.
At the head of the field are British Team Saab Salomon and U.S. team Spyder. Both teams looking close to exhausted, but are making sound progress on course as they struggle through soft sand under foot in temperatures nearing 40 degrees celcius.
“It’s hot, sandy and it’s harder than we thought it would be, Team Spyder’s Travis Macy said while fighting for breath as he kitted up for the ropes section.
“A good day of suffering for sure and just 9k left, the worst is over.
With it’s lineup of well credentialed runners, Saab Solomon is expecting to make up more time during the longest trekking section, but team captain Phil Davies admits it won’t be an easy task.
“We’re having a good run, the lads are doing well, getting a bit of cramp, not used to the heat, Davies said.
“I think some teams are really going to struggle out there today.
The first day of the X-Adventure Raid World Cup race will finish with a ninety kilometre mountain bike ride, before teams enjoy a brief overnight rest.See All Event Posts
