The final two teams crossed the finish line of Bimbache Extrem 2006 just before the official course closing time (19.00) on the last day of the race ... and just in time for the prize giving! Team Gallaecia Bugarent were first to arrive and impressively they managed to get washed and changed and down into town for the prize giving despite their fatigue. Just behind them were Bosi Colombia, the only team to finish with 2 male and 2 female racers.

They missed the prize giving which, given the condition of some of the competitors, was in the appropriately named ‘Hospital San Juan de Dios’ – though this wasn’t quite what you might expect. Finding it in a maze of narrow streets was a new navigational challenge all of it’s own but once through the door competitors found themselves in a magnificent open courtyard set with palm trees from where they walked through to the original chapel.

It’s now used as an auditorium but retains its grandeur, and the vaulted ceilings, richly decorated alcoves and stained glass windows were a magnificent setting for the closing ceremony and presentations. Each team was brought up to the stage and spoke a few words about their experiences on a course that had taken them on a journey across Andalusia. All agreed Antonio de la Rosa had set a course that allowed them to explore the region’s different landscapes and cultures and that it was a course that tested them to their limits, but as Bjorn Rydvall of Lundhags Adventure commented; “Yes it was tough – but that’s why we’re here!See All Event Posts
