AROC/SleepMonsters Aus / 04.04.2006

A sense of anticipation and excitement engulfed the busses as over 150 competitors from all over Australia made their way to the remote start of the AROC 12 and 24 hour urban adventure. Starting in Sparrow Hill with a challenging orienteering leg through the pine forest it was onto the bikes for over 10km of arguably Australia’s best flowing single track through pine and eucalypt forest, past dams and fields. Adrenalin high from the sweeping turns it was on to the hills of Kowen Forest and through to the Queanbeyan River. A 5km kayak with a 500m portage mid way took teams to an abseil at White Rocks and a rogaine on foot through fairly open spur, gully terrain. This rogaine lead them back to their bikes. On returning to the bikes for a leg into Canberra City teams struck their real big challenge and an experience that determined the true meaning of perseverance, team work and the ability to adapt to the circumstances – the essence of adventure racing.
