Riding, Tying, ‘doin the splitz’…and those hills.

Starting with a mad scramble for the first checkpoint, the 150-strong field then plunged into the surrounding suburbs and refreshing creeks of the Brookfield and Kenmore areas.

Leg One consisted of a ‘Ride and Tie’, with two riders swapping for a runner throughout the leg. Despite a host of creek crossings and CP collections along the way, this did little to spread the leading teams as a huge bundle of competitors emerged from the surrounding scrub and descended on the kayak TA.

The 3.2km kayak leg along Moggill Creek and onto the mighty Brisbane River soon spread the field. Team Geographically Challanged, Team Area51 Golite, Team I’m With Stupid and Team Mountain Designs all emerged from the water within five minutes of each other, looking strong and charging off into a short hike leg before collecting the two bikes once again.

Between Checkpoints 10 and 11, teams were permitted to split their three members as they went searching for four scattered controls. Titled “Doin The Splitz�, a host of strategies and techniques came into play during this leg- some teams sending their bikers off together, some splitting three ways and some pairing a biker and a runner to share the load.
