Start to CP1

We steered our kayak to the bank of Lake Eildon for an early exit, and ran along its shores to Frys Bay, automatically making ground of the entire field for the first 200 meters. It was here, just five minutes after the start, that we had to make our first critical decision of the race. Having decided to run around instead of kayaking, the banks of Eildon became to steep to traverse so we had to decide to climb over the spur, or go back to our boats and continue paddling. We decided to climb! Ian led the way and I stayed close to Del allowing both of us to follow Ian’s path through the thick bush. We finally popped out on the ridge after climbing 100m vertical. After descending down the other side through a recently cleared pine forest, we arrived at the CP 1 in first place. I was quite surprised by this, but encouraged as our risky decision had paid off. Adventure racing can be so unpredictable.

CP2 – CP5

After a refreshing swim we were off to collect four checkpoints on foot before arriving back at our kayaks. Team Wilderness Wear were in third position at this stage, about 5-10 minutes behind the leaders. Ian navigated us to CP 2 and 3, we made good time, accurate navigation and quickly collected CP 4 and 5 and made our way back to the boats.
