Mexicans Cross The Border Again

The race was held in Canberra, and as well as the usual MTB kayak and run components there was also a kickbike section (bit like a scooter). There was a compulsory stop at a pizza restaurant, a house party, and several checkpoints located in bars or nightclubs under the supervision of the DJ! The race started with a rogaine, a ride including some superb single track and a bit more running and kayaking and biking in some order which the team’s very tired female now fails to recall! The part where we rode over a patch of grass full of prickles and simultaneously got 6 punctures was hard to forget though. Team WW also made a lengthy stop on someone’s driveway along the way to borrow a bucket of water to fix our 7th & 8th punctures of the day, and patch tubes before getting to the house party for much needed beer (JK) chocolate (DL) and a track pump (IF). Things picked up after pizza & (headache) drugs at about 8pm as we sped back to transition for a tour of the town’s night-spots by kick-bike. JK tooted at everyone we saw and rang the bike’s bell continuously, much to the entertainment of confused & drunken pedestrians. There was plenty of encouragement on the streets with shouts ranging from “what the..?� to “ah! those are the adventure people� to “go kickbikers!� As the early hours drew near it was a very welcome distraction.
