MOMAR Ucluelet, BC
12 hours to go!
Jacqueline Windh / 13.05.2006

Pre-race report Friday May 12, 9pmI’ve just returned from theMOMAR race registration in Ucluelet. 133 racers are registered so far, and race director Bryan Tasaka tells me that a few last-minute entries have shown up, including two racers from Mexico!
The breakdown of entries (not include last-minuters) is as follows:
3 solo women
10 solo men
20 mixed pairs
5 female pairs
15 male pairs
5 mixed teams
3 female teams
2 male teams
We know a little bit about the course now, and will get the details tomorrow morning, just before the 9:00 am start. What we know so far is:
Section 1: 10 km kayak, in Ucluelet Harbour
Section 2: first half of 25 km mountain biking, mostly on logging roads
Section 3: 4 km trek
Section 4: second half of 25 km biking
Section 5: 11 km “scenic coastal trail run – I’m betting that it has to be along the Wild Pacific Trail, with the finish line somewhere in Ucluelet town.
The weather today was great (well, rain showers and hail interspersed with sunshine this morning, but fining up all afternoon), and the forecast tomorrow is excellent: totally sunny, high of 14 degrees, with the marine forecast calling for NW winds of up to 20 knots (usually they don’t blow as strong as that on shore though).
Personally, I am having mixed feelings about plunging into this racing scene... moments of feeling positive and ready and excited, but also at times nervous and wondering what have I got myself into. I guess that’s probably normal. It was great meeting everyone this evening – a very good atmosphere, with lots of smiling faces and lots of people telling me that I have picked a great race to get into the sport with. The theme of the race is PIRATES – the T-shirts are really cool (black) and some teams have already showed up in costume!
OK, I gotta get my sleep. There is wireless internet at the Tauca Lea Resort, where most of the racers are staying, so I expect to be able to get a race report up shortly after the finish tomorrow evening. Talk to you then!See All Event Posts
