Canadian Canoes and Maple Syrup

The Yeti / 21.05.2006See All Event Posts Follow Event
“The best one yet seemed to be the consensus around Base Camp as teams mingled at the awards barbeque in a dignified manner; a hot pancake in each hand, dripping maple syrup on their scratched, bruised, and beaten legs. With the Red Yeti 36-hour Midnight Assault behind them, teams started to share their war stories… tales of sleepmonsters, caves, and endless paddles.

The most competitive field of racers yet to be seen at a Red Yeti event started at midnight on Friday from a remote location, 45 minutes north-west of Portland. With the simple word “go uttered under a full moon, 11 teams of 4 anxiously embarked upon a course that would take them approximately 175 km to the finish line. The first of 9 legs was a 10 km trek along the high banks of the Glenelg River, collecting two of three checkpoints (CP) before dropping into transition area 1 (TA 1) on the river. A speedy transition for all teams and they were off down the tidal flows of the river in one Canadian canoe and one kayak. Sorting out paddling positions as they went, teams where to collect 2 CP’s on this 32 km section. Unfortunately CP 1 had been nicked, a phenomenon which would be repeated once more during the race, but which didn’t deter teams in the least.
