Canadian Adventure Racing Championships Course Description

Day One (Canadian Sprint Championship) – 6-8 hour race

• MTB 28km
• Total Distance: 84km

Highlights:
• Visiting original Hudson’s Bay Company Fur Trade Posts in Gogama and Mattagami
• Great mountain biking on well-used ATV and Snowmobile trails
• Secluded wilderness lake and river paddling with some small rapids
• A challenging trek through terrain with an abundance of elevation gain and loss
• Two checkpoints located at high points of land affording great views of the surrounding area. One at Bald Rock, the other at a fire tower.

Route Description:

This is a loop course beginning and ending at the Mattagami First Nations Reserve. Starting on mountain bikes, competitors will ride west on well-used ATV, powerline, and snowmobile trails through the town of Gogama, passing the original Hudson’s Bay Company Outpost and continuing on to Wizard Lake. From there they’ll transition to canoes, and paddle north up Wizard Lake, passing millenniums old pictographs. They’ll then continue down the Makami River, where they’ll have the option to run some rapids, or take a few portages. After locating a bend on the Makami River, and portaging out to the Gogama Unit Road teams will transition to trekking. Starting on trail, teams will ascend Bald Rock. From the top, teams will actually be able to see their destination some 7km’s of difficult routefinding and bushwhacking away. The trek is through a boreal forest dotted with countless swamps and area’s of blowdowns, which will undoubtedly impede their progress . At the end of this trek teams will visit an old fire tower standing atop the highest point of land in the area. Once down from the fire tower teams will transition to mountain bikes for a 28km ride on old logging roads and ATV trails to the finish-line back at the Mattagami First Nations Reserve.
