Top Two Teams Pull Away From the Pack
Corey Rosen / 02.06.2006

When we last saw Team SOLE and Eastern Mountain Sports, they were leaving Checkpoint 16 at 10:50pm continuing on the 48 mile monster trek. Again, the two lead teams left the CP together and headed in different directions. Two seperate route choices brought these teams further apart on the course then they had been since the start. EMS arrived at CP17 at 12:39am and immediately headed towards Transition Area #4. Team SOLE pulled into CP17 forty minutes later, almost assuring them they had lost the lead. When Team SOLE arrived at TA4 in first place at 5:40am, they were pleasantly surprised. Not only had they made up the forty minute gap in front of them, they also arrived with a five minute lead time into the TA. Team SOLE decided to go with the quick transition, getting back on the course in just over a half-hour. Team EMS arrived at TA4 at 5:45am and took a solid hour-and-a-half to get back on the course.
With a new hour lead, Team SOLE pulled further and further ahead through the third bike leg, arriving at CP19 at 10:16am. EMS did not arrive until 11:39am. EMS was over an hour behind the lead team. This gap slowly increased throughout the bike leg. At this point in the competition, Race Directors saw how spread out over the course teams were and decided to drop the Orienteering Course for logistical reasons. Some of the estimated times for the sections were a little less then the racers had planned. Team SOLE arrived at TA5 at 4:31pm. EMS pulled in almost an hour-an-a-half later at 6:00pm exactly. At the end of day 3, Team SOLE arrived at CP23 at 10:35pm with a clear two hour lead over EMS and the rest of the pack.See All Event Posts
