Rain Rain Go Away!

The penultimate day of the Hebridean Challenge started cold, damp and grey. The forecast of ‘some showers’ turned out to be one continuous shower lasting the whole morning, making progress slow and painful for the already weary racers.

The first order of the day was a short road bike leg, starting up a large hill before dropping down towards Giosla. The unfortunate downside of the greater height and exposure of Lewis was many teams being blown off their bikes on the first leg of the day.

One unfortunate runner, waiting to be tagged by his bikers (3 had set off together to maximise points), was told by another team “all your riders have crashed. A degree of panic ensued, swiftly followed by the true story that the rider had been hit by a gust of wind, stumbled but stayed upright, however on looking back to check on the riders behind him saw them all sprawled face down on the verge!

After the runners had been tagged, many using an MTB to get to the first checkpoint, the teams continued to the end of the first run to send a second runner into the mountain time trial.
