The Best of the Best

A total of 33 teams from 14 countries will soon line up for the 2006 Adventure Racing World Championship, starting in Hemavan/Tärnaby in Northern Sweden on Wednesday 16th August. The race, in which teams will take more than 5 days to cover the 800km course through the Arctic Circle regions of Sweden and Norway, is the culmination of the World Series, an elite selection of the world’s hardest and longest races. The teams who have qualified for the final bring with them hard won experience from racing in all regions of the world and a competitive spirit which still embraces the uncertainties of adventure racing, and the companionship of this unique team sport.
Course Designer and Race Director Mikael Nordstöm has prepared a course suitable for this remarkable collection of athletes and appropriate to the occasion and setting. "This course is the best one I have ever designed, he said. “It is a beautiful, technical and sometimes very challenging course with many opportunities for tactical moves".
“This World Championship race will cover demanding terrain in some of northern Sweden and Norway’s most remote and picturesque locations. Teams will navigate their way through glaciers, coastlines, cave systems, mountain passes, canyons and river valleys and experience some of Scandinavia’s most pristine environments.
Nordstrom’s reputation and that of the team around him, are one reason the race has attracted all the World’s top adventure racers. He has raced in almost every world class adventure race himself, most often with Team Halti, who finished 5th in the last World Championships in New Zealand. With Helena Lind he has organised successful races in Sweden for the past 6 years, including the worlds only ‘airborne expedition race’ at Explore Sweden. Also on the organising team is Michael Lemmel who helped start adventure racing in Sweden and with team Cross competed successfully in more than 40 international races.See All Event Posts
