Adventure Racing World Championship 2006
ARWC 2006 is over – Scotland is next in 2007
24.08.2006

The 2006 Adventure Race World Championships finished with the race party in Hemavan and with team Nike Powerblast crowned as champions. The top 5 teams received cash prizes and momentos of the race – small reindeer skin pelts, made from those which they’d slept on in the teepees set up at transition areas around the race course. There was also a special presentation from the Norwegian Arctic Circle Tourism association to the organisers Mikael Nordstrom, Helana Lind and Mikael Lemmel for all they had done to help promote their area.
Speaking for the winners, and for all the competitors, Ian Adamson of Nike Powerblast made a special thank you to the faultless work of the race staff – who had often had less sleep than the teams, were always smiling, and made thousands of gear lifts without any mistakes. The logistics of this race were perhaps some of the most complex ever.
At the final count 21 of the 32 teams completed the course, a high finish rate for a World Championships, and for such a long course. It’s another testament to Mikael Nordstrom’s course which was of the highest and hardest standard, but still achievable.
At the close of proceedings there was also a chance to watch a film of the Wilderness ARC, and most of the racers sat to watch footage of trekking, kayaking and canyoning in Scotland. Tired as they were, it was an inspiring film and their thoughts turned to next May and the next World Championships in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
