7 Cerros Medellin Adventure Race
MedellÃn gives us a great welcome!
Jacqueline Windh / 12.10.2006

"This is the only place in the world that can offer such an adventure race in an urban setting" says MedellÃn's mayor Sergio Fajardo Valderama.I know I know... we have all been to more than enough opening ceremonies with lots of formal political speeches, but this one was different.
The mayor arrived at this morning's reception on a bike. After a short speech, which he gave in both Spanish and good English, the MC opened the floor to questions from the press. But the mayor took the microphone back and started asking questions of the team captains himself. Not only did he show a great sense of pride in his city, he also demonstrated to us his genuine interest in the racers.
If the spirit shown today in MedellÃn is any indication of what's to come, this is going to be a GREAT race. Directors Jorge Diego Llano and Luisa Fernanda RÃos (who are racers themselves for the national team BOSI COLOMBIA) and all of their assistants and volunteers are both very organized and very friendly. And the setting is simply spectacular!
For all the bad news of MedellÃn that we have heard around the world over the years, we are finding the city to be warm and welcoming. Of course there are certain neighbourhoods that we are told that it would not be very safe for us to go to. But, as Antonio de la Rosa noted yesterday, "Things have changed here from a few years ago. These days, Madrid is a much more dangerous place to be than MedillÃn."
