Team FINLAND, one of the best expedition-length race teams in the world, today showed that speed and endurance are not mutually exclusive – taking first place in what must be one of the shortest adventure races on the planet: the UNE CHALLENGE.
This race was the "Prologue" to the big 3-day event, which starts tomorrow – a bit of a warmup for the competitors, and a chance for the international teams to check out the little wooden go-karts. It consisted of a three-stage timed relay:
1. one lap of the track (approx. 1 km) pushing the go-kart (2 team members)
2. skate one lap of the track (1 team member)
3. short run to a rope ascent to the third floor of a tower then, run down and back to the start (1 team member)
FINLAND is the only team to finish the test in under six minutes – coming in more than 20 seconds before second-place HALTI (SWE). While some of the teams struggled with the ropes section, FINLAND Captain Petri Forsman just powered up the wall, a performance that no doubt contributed to their significant margin over the rest. HALTI's captain Mikael Nordström was disappointed that it started raining just as it was his team's turn to race. "The track was really slippery. I could feel my foot slipping with every push on the turns, and couldn't go full speed."
FINLAND wins $2000 worth of gear and prizes. Top five teams, with a good balance between the international field and the locals, were:
1. FINLAND (FIN) 5:43
2. HALTI (SWE) 6:06
3. RIOS Y CANOAS (COL) 6:11
4. SOLE (USA) 6:25
5. BOSI (COL) 6:26
