Wet and wild weekend for Maximum Adventure training course

Throughout the preceding days Sydney had experienced winds of up to 97km/hr, torrential rain and cold weather, so it was fingers crossed that the weekend would bring fair weather - or at least some respite. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and the blustery, wet conditions continued over the weekend.

The two-day Adventure Racing (AR) training course was held on the banks of Narrabeen Lake on Sydney\'s beautiful Northern Beaches. Driving up the coast, we noticed the huge seas, the dark clouds…then came a huge downpour. Arriving shortly after 7am, we found our training location underwater - the lake had broken its banks. The car park could now be used as a launching spot for the kayaks! Seeking higher ground, we set up the marquee near the club house and protected ourselves against the elements as best we could.

The participants began arriving just before 9am and it was admirable that that every single person (bar one who was taken ill the night before) turned up! It showed that these guys were made of the right stuff!

Each person who attended the course had a different background and experience in the sport - some had never done an adventure race before, some had not done much mountain
biking or ever kayaked, and there were others who had done a few races and were quite experienced. The biggest surprise was for one participant who was brought along
by his boss as a work incentive. He wasn\'t even aware that he was doing a course, let alone one involving adventure racing. Surprise!
