The Original Mountain Marathon 2006
What a Difference a Night Makes
Rob Howard / 29.10.2006

The weather on Sunday could not be in greater contrast to the wet and dismal conditions on Saturday. Stars shining in the early morning were a good sign and by dawn it was clear the second day of competition was going to be a bright, sunny autumnal day. Today the Galloway weather relented and the worst it could do was a slight morning chill – there was not even any mist or fog on the hills. It’s the first time the sun has shone on a Galloway OMM (KIMM).
Those in the C/Short Score chasing start had to be up and packed in darkness for their chasing starts, with the C course leaders, Chris Buxton and David Turton, leaving at 7.00am. With them were one of the top 20 Short Score teams, drawn in a ballot to set off in the 7 to 8am chasing start.
Watching the leaders leave were Kevin and Duncan Honeysett, but they had to wait 14 minutes before setting off behind them – the time differential from day one. “We’ve given them a start, joked Duncan, “but this morning was the first time we saw them and they look good. It’s a lot of time to catch up on a short day, but we’ll give it our best.
They were also looking over their shoulders as 3rd placed pair, Alan Irving and Michael Park left only 21 seconds behind them.
The winners are expected back at the finish in around 3 hours on the 15km day two course, and many have remarked that the C course much easier this year.See All Event Posts
