In late October Adventure Zone Scotland Held it first Junior Adventure Race for Youths between the ages of 14 to 16 at Pollock Park in Glasgow.

At noon Phil Robinson, the Co-Director of Adventure Zone Scotland, blasted the horn to set off the staggered start of the Orienteering section. This would be the longest section of the race and a new challenge to almost all those taking part, who had never used an orienteering map before.

They might have seen them or heard of the sport, but not used them and so with some coaching they tried, and tried, and tried. Boy did they try! The time allocated was 45 minutes, but most took 60 to 80 minutes. Not one team gave up and all came back smiling or laughing at the fact that they all got lost at some point. One comment was “less trees and bushes and we might find the marker posts next time!.

The next section was the mountain biking, which was a marked route and everyone loved it. Most didn’t own mountain bikes (the organisation supplied them), and it was a chance to get really muddy. Those who wore white tracksuits and trainers took some serious washing home to mum!

Next up was an inflatable raft crossing of a small pond. This was made without a paddle, and any who were not muddy and wet already, were now!

Section 4 was the climbing wall and by this point a lot of watching adults wanted to know if there were races like this that they could try! “It looks great fun! said one onlooker, who was promptly given details of races held in Scotland.See All Event Posts
