Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge
Cycle Champ Kelly Out On Day 2
07.11.2006

The unpredictable Tasmanian weather turned on the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge yesterday evening, making a difficult mountain bike stage, near impossible. Driving rain, strong headwinds and temperatures, that dropped to near freezing, led to triple world cycling champion, Shane Kelly dropping out of today’s stages.Kelly suffered debilitating leg cramps during the ride which went well into the night but the world champ hopes to be back in the race tomorrow (Wednesday).
After camping out overnight, Webber led the teams out on a 33km hike from Lake Ada through to the Walls of Jerusalem. Clear skies soon turned for the worse, bringing more rain, hail at times and making conditions slippery and testing.
The all-star celebrity team (Craig Mottram, Craig Walton, Syd Taberlay) were joined by Oarsome Foursome rower Mike McKay as a replacement for Kelly, and set off to a cracking pace. Finishing the remote trek, a clear 29minutes ahead of Webber’s Pure Tasmania team.
