Team Yackatoon / 04.02.2007
Our team Yackatoon was Greg Bacon, Danny Ma and a first timer in adventure racing, Christian Durrant ( Serge) We were all a little underdone on the training side for this event and our aim was to just go the distance.As there was to be ocean paddling in the event all the teams had to complete a paddle/capsize test on the Friday before the race. The surf was good fun, the water was warm and we had a few runs at riding in on the waves. The maps were given out on Friday night with pre marked checkpoints. We prepared our maps, packed our boxes and were ready to race. Serge checked the weather forecast, bad move, as gale force winds were predicted for around 11.00 am in the morning.
Leg 1 Coasteer/run/swim 5km
We started the race on Barlings Beach at 9.30am, there was a good southerly blowing but the swell was not too daunting. The first swim saw one team member swim out to a rocky outcrop for a Cp with the other team members swimming/wading close by then around the beach to the next river crossing. Swimming is not my best discipline and I found my self hanging onto a green channel marker as the tide got hold of me, Serge zoomed past grabbed me then pushed me to the other side, thanks Serge! Back on foot to the kayaks up river for the short paddle to the river mouth then a short paddle around the headland.
