AROC 24 Hour Adventure, South Coast, NSW
Ever feel like you’ve been cursed by the AR gods?
Team Extreemo / 04.02.2007

Didn’t happen.Based on our experiences during this race, team Xtreemo has compiled the “Seven habits of highly DEfective adventure racers.
1.Roll with it.
We were egotistical enough to think that we might get out of having to do the competency testing. That not being the case, we paddled out and I jumped out cautiously as I didn’t want to get my hair wet during such a simple exercise. We got back on the kayak in a jiffy and caught a small wave back in (yawn)… “Not big enough we were told. Fine. Back out we went. On the wave… right in to shore and then… over. Bugger. Here I was in shallow water, my face pressed into the ocean floor with a kayak smacked into my head and back. And to top it off my bloody hair got wet! I jumped up and sarcastically asked “Is that a pass? The blank stare was enough of an answer and out we went again.
2.Align your goals (and you maps).
We were certainly doomed before we started. We were planning our route and couldn’t quite figure out how to get from 44 to 45 without riding down the highway. It wasn’t until after a few puzzling answers from Tom at the briefing led us to review the maps. We then realized that we had aligned the west-most map incorrectly (by 10 kilometers!). Well at least it was *before* the start.
