Keen Adventure Race, Great Ocean Road Australia
Prologue
Rapid Ascent / 13.03.2007

Torquay local Bruce Dunlop and New Zealand teammate Liam Drew won the Prologue of the Keen Adventure Race at Port Campbell this afternoon, with a winning time of 1:53:23. Big Surf and tricky navigating were the talking points in the Prologue\'s aftermath.Racing in team gorideawave.com.au/elsidee.com, Dunlop and Drew raced smart through the final orienteering stage of the race to win by 3:36. In second place was team NSW Stingers (Rob Preston and Richard Mountstephens) and in third place, a further 2:31 behind, was team Keen Footwear (Jarad Kohlar & Damon Goerke).
Dunlop and Drew proved that teamwork counts as Dunlop used his strong paddling skills in huge conditions to stay near the lead, before Drew used his navigational skills to find the quickest route around the final 11km run/orienteering section.
\"Bruce did all the tough stuff,\" said Drew of his teammate\'s paddling. It was Drew\'s first time in wild surf conditions. \"It was lumpy and bumpy; really hard to see,\" he said.
A spectacular start saw competitors plunge from Port Campbell\'s lofty pier and into the bay for a 400m swim. Team Adidas (Simon Knowles and Beni Hug) led the teams onto the beach for paddle, closely followed by Team Anaconda (Darren Clarke and Guy Andrews).
The paddle leg took competitors 800m offshore before sending them east into a building wind for a further 2km. They then circled a buoy, before retracing their path back to the Port Campbell Beach and it was at this far buoy where the first drama of the Keen Adventure Race was played out. Race leaders Team Anaconda and World Champion New Zealanders Team adventuresportnz.com (Richard Ussher and Gordon Walker) over shot the buoy by several hundred meters, losing the lead in the process.
